Maxine Bargerhuff Obituary

Maxine Mercedes (Bevington) Bargerhuff, 101, passed away peacefully at 12:25 am on Friday, June 28, 2019 at Hickory Creek one day short of her 102nd birthday.

She was born in Miami County, June 29, 1917 to Clarence Edison Bevington and Sylvia Marie (Stout) Bevington Bailey. She was the oldest of eight children. She married Harold Maurice "Cy" Bargerhuff on September 6, 1936, at First Baptist Church of Bunker Hill, Indiana between church and Sunday School services. Maxine was a 1935 graduate of Bunker Hill High School. She sang in the Merrie Maides Trio with her sister, M. Arlene (Bevington) Lewis, and Virginia (McCafferty) Shrock. Maxine was an active member of the Loree First Brethren Church as part of the Women's Missionary Society, teaching Sunday School, and singing in the choir. Earlier in her life, Maxine was a member of the Clay Township Homemakers’ Club and the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU).

She was a homemaker, working part-time at J.C. Penney and Kresge's Department Store. She was also a cook at Maconaquah School Corporation. What she valued most, though, was the time spent with her family.

Maxine is survived by her son, Gary M. Bargerhuff (Susan) of Michigan, daughter-in-law, Marion A. (Foy) Bargerhuff (Jerry) Cardwell of Indiana, and daughter, Kay Ellen (Bargerhuff) Voorhees, Indiana. Also, ten grandchildren: Martin M. Bargerhuff (Cheryl), and David G. Bargerhuff of Indiana; Julia A. (Bargerhuff) Smith and Heidi L. Bargerhuff of Michigan; Gerri A. (Bargerhuff) Dupee (Robert) of Tennessee; Kirk E. Bargerhuff (Dawn) of Kentucky and Dr. Eric J. Bargerhuff (Jennifer) of Florida; Erica K. (Voorhees) Martin (Craig) of New York, Matthew B. C. Voorhees of Iowa, and Alisha E. (Voorhees) Rickard (Dennis) of Indiana, and 15 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving: a brother, H. Verlin Bevington (Velma), Indiana, a sister, Carolyn A. (Bevington) Norris (Robert) of Indiana, stepsister Delores "Dodie" (Bailey) Hopkins (Jack) of Ohio, sister-in-law Monelle Bevington of Kokomo, and sister-in-law Brandi Bailey of California.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Harry Bailey, husband "Cy," and son, Jerry J. Bargerhuff. Also, brothers Second Lt. Galen E., Richard Dale, and Ronald W. Bevington; sisters M. Arlene (Bevington) Lewis and Phyllis (Bevington) Wheeler; stepbrother Richard “Dick” Bailey, and stepsisters Sue (Bailey) Alexander and Helen (Bailey) Solami.
