Thomas W. “Tom” McCain, 74, of Kokomo, passed away on August 6, 2023, with his wife by his side, after a lengthy illness.
Tom was born March 28, 1949, in Peru, Indiana to Carl and Faye (LaBorg) McCain. On September 5, 1970, he married Vicky Latta in Peru, Indiana.
After graduating from Peru High School in 1967, Tom went to work for Chrysler, where he served in various capacities for 35 years in the Kokomo Transmission Plant until his retirement in 2002. In 1969, he was drafted into the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Benning, GA. After serving his country for two years, Tom, Vicky, and their cat Tabitha moved back to Indiana in 1971.
Tom and Vicky moved to Greentown in 1976, where they raised their daughter. Tom was a great dad: he coached his daughter’s softball teams, made Cream of Wheat with honey on top, fixed boo-boos and broken toys, and most importantly, he loved unconditionally.
After retirement, Tom and Vicky downsized to Kokomo, where he loved hosting barbecues and picnics for family and friends.
Over the years, he enjoyed several hobbies. One of his passions was woodworking, which allowed him to follow in his grandfather and namesake’s footsteps to build beautiful furniture, and later, items for Vicky’s home décor store. He also earned a certificate in massage therapy, then used his talent to help many disabled clients.
Tom was a self-declared “Quality Inspector” when it came to freshly baked Christmas cookies made by his wife and granddaughter.
His most favorite thing of all was spending time with his daughter and granddaughter.
Tom is survived by his wife Vicky; daughter Kelly (Brett) McCain Smith of Carmel; granddaughter Ashelyn McKillip of Carmel; niece Sherry Raber of Peru, grandnieces Shelbey Brown and Lily Raber of Peru; and brother-in-law Gary Raber of Peru.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Debby Raber.
Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11 at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 E. Third St., Peru. Funeral service and military rites will be held immediately following at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Phil Cruea officiating.
