Robert L. McKinley went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Peru on December 31, 1940 to Lloyd & Jesse (Hinkle) McKinley. Bob (“Big Mac”) graduated from Peru High School in 1959. On April 25, 1964, he married Florence Yoder, whom he fondly referred to as “Flossie.” Bob worked for Essex Wire and retired from General Tire.
An avid Notre Dame Fan, he never turned down an opportunity to attend a football game, no matter how many hours or signs it took to find tickets. Bob could often be found at the Peru Ball Park, whether he was playing or watching he did it with passion - often acting as the bleacher umpire. Also, attending the IU and Kentucky all-star game with friends and cheering for his beloved Hoosiers was a highlight each year.
One of his talents was working with wood. He referred to himself and Flo as “Hack and Wack.” He always gave his creations away, never accepting anything for them, except maybe a Burger King Coupon.
Bob is survived by his wife Flo, and daughters Debbie (Steve) Bryant of Evans, GA, and Jennifer Shupperd of Walton, IN; as well as grandchildren Tyler Bryant, Amanda Bryant of GA, Jerett Shupperd, Brant Shupperd of Walton, IN, and Jeremy Shupperd of Elwood, IN. Also surviving are sister Barbara (Leroy) Miller, of Peru, IN, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lloyd McKinley, Gerald McKinley, and sister Betty (Dearl) Ashley.
Visitation will be held from 2pm - 4pm on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at the Peru Church of the Brethren, 134 East 5th Street, Peru, Indiana. Funeral service will follow at 4pm, with Pastor Phil Troxell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Toys for Tots, The American Heart Association, and the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.FlowersLeedyAllen.com.
