Raymond "Ray" Maggard Obituary

Raymond Leland Maggard, 83, of Peru, passed away on Sunday morning, August 25, 2024.

He was born in Wooten, Kentucky on August 26, 1940 to the late Arnold Maggard and Leona (Spencer) Watts.  After moving up to Indiana with his family from their home in Kentucky, Raymond attended and graduated from Peru High School, Class of 1958.  Ray met his sweetheart, Nancy (Hendricks) Maggard and they were married on October 11, 1959.  After their wedding, Ray and Nancy drove their 1953 Ford convertible out to Yuma, Arizona because Ray joined the Marine Corps.

In a few years, they would return to Peru, Indiana with their first born daughter, Chrissy, in tow and would welcome their second daughter, Debbie, shortly after. One of his favorite memories was coaching his girls' softball team.  If you knew Ray, you would say he was a jack of all trades.  He and Nancy owned several businesses throughout their life together.  A furniture company, a construction business, a horse stables, a nursing home, an assisted living center, and an ice cream shoppe to name a few.  He had many favorite animals over the years but his pride and joy was his Arabian stallion, Masuga Bukari.  He took 'Sugi' to many horse shows and exhibits.  You would have thought Ray would have slowed down as he got older but that was never the case.  He spent his last years hauling hay, climbing ladders, building his new home, working on Sunday school lessons, and giving his great-grandson, Axel, pony rides.  He was a long-time member of the Church of Christ and an elder for many years.  He touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

Raymond is survived by his sister, Marjorie (Maggard) Fiedler, daughter, Christina (Maggard) Kreutzer, granddaughters, Karlee (Alex) Wolf, Victoria Kreutzer, Chelsea (Mitch) Howard, Alexa Singletary, brother-in-law, Richard (Beth) Hendricks. His great-grandchildren, Axel Wolf and Penelope Wolf, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Buffy.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Nancy (Hendricks) Maggard, daughter, Debra (Maggard) Singletary, and brother, Marvin Maggard.
