Paula "Nikie" Starkey Obituary

Paula Nicol(Nikie) Starkey, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2026. Born on October 17, 1941, in Peru, Indiana, Nikie was the daughter of the late John and Kathryn Aikman. Throughout her 84 years, she touched the lives of many with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith.

A proud graduate of Peru High School, Class of 1959, Nikie dedicated her entire professional career to Peru Community Schools. She retired as high school attendance secretary in 2003 with the respect and admiration of her colleagues and students.

In 1968, Nikie married Max Starkey, embarking on a journey together that spanned 57 years. They share three daughters—Laura Dillon, Mary Kathryn (husband Mark) Purvis, and Kristen (husband Parley) Ward. Nikie’s legacy also lives on in her five grandchildren: Haley Charles, Cooper, Vesse, Kevin, and Maraya Purvis, all of whom she adored.

Nikie was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Jack Aikman, and she carried their memory with love and fondness. Her family was her pride and joy, and she devoted her life to nurturing and supporting them in every way possible.

A woman of strong Christian faith, Nikie was a founding member of the Bible Forum and actively participated in various community organizations, including the Dukes Auxiliary Board. Her vibrant spirit was evident in her enthusiasm for socializing with fellow car enthusiasts and her commitment to maintaining lifelong friendships with her high school classmates. Nikie’s love for animals, particularly her cherished cats, and her delight in spoiling her grandchildren, were hallmarks of her generous and loving nature.

Nikie’s  friendly demeanor meant she never met a stranger, and her warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. Her ability to connect with others and her devotion to her family and faith were truly

Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire Blair Ridge staff for their compassionate care during Nikie’s final weeks.
