Merlen Lee Rasmussen, age 77, of Peru, Indiana, passed away peacefully on July 4th, 2025, at Lutheran Hospital in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, veteran, and man of faith, Merlen’s life was defined by integrity, love, and service.
Born on October 1st, 1947, in Red Wing, Minnesota to Vernon Dorance and Martha Elizabeth (Daenzer) Rasmussen, Merlen grew up with strong values that would guide him through every chapter of life. He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 38 years, dedicated himself to his country with patriotism and unwavering duty.
On October 12th, 1968, he married the love of his life, Donna Sue (Ingalsbe) Rasmussen. Together, they raised four children who were the pride of his heart: Tim Rasmussen (wife Joan) of Omaha, Nebraska, Jeremy Rasmussen (wife Christina) of Alexandria, Indiana, Tabetha Hancock (husband Dale) of Greenfield, Indiana, and James Rasmussen (wife Cassandra) of Fargo, North Dakota.
Merlen’s joy multiplied with each generation. He was a beloved grandfather to Tyler Nickerson, C.J. Rasmussen, Kassandra Brandt (husband Johnathan), Kourtney Flannery (husband Alvin), Kraig Hancock (fiancé Emily Wolf), Kynsey Hancock, Max Rasmussen, Reese Rasmussen, and Lane Rasmussen. He also cherished his ten great-grandchildren deeply. He is survived by his sister, Carol Stejskal of Maple Grove, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Larry Rasmussen, Benny Rasmussen, Allen Rasmussen, a brother-in-law Terry Stejskal and sister-in-law Gale Rasmussen.
Merlen loved spending time playing euchre with his friends. He was a man of great faith and a dedicated member of Oakdale Baptist Church in Peru, Indiana, where he was an active member involved in church life and Bible study. He had a deep love for carpentry, a gift for working with his hands, and a soul that found purpose in helping others. He stood firmly on his convictions, lived with honesty, and led his family with humility and strength.
A memorial service will be held at Oakdale Baptist Church, 348 Chili Avenue, Peru, Indiana on July 15th, 2025. Calling hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with funeral services immediately following at 1:00 p.m., Officiated by Pastor Adam Linkenhoker. Burial services will take place at Ever Rest Memorial Park in Logansport, Indiana, immediately following the service.
Merlen Lee Rasmussen leaves behind a legacy of faith, honor, and love. His presence will be deeply missed, but his example with continue to guide all who knew and loved him.
