Mary Ellen (Colescott) McCurtain – (age 90) of Bunker Hill, Indiana was called home at 4:57 a.m. on Saturday, July 20th, 2024 – Blair Ridge Health Campus.
Mary Ellen was born on February 10th, 1934 to John Edward and Edna Ruth (Stambro) Colescott. She was one of ten children her parents raised.
On November 17th, 1957 she married John G. McCurtain. They had four sons; David Jon of Peru, Paul Nathan, Christopher (Kimberly) of Kokomo, and Mark Andrew (Kay). These sons gave them six grandkids, Tony Cook, Amber (Cody) Cox, Paul (Haley) McCurtain, Ashley Shupperd, Kelly and Jessica.
Mary Ellen was a 1952 graduate of Eastern High School. She then attended Purdue University on a one year scholarship from 4-H, where she was a member for 11 years.
She enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, music, doing puzzles, bookkeeping, and traveling with her family and as a missionary.
Mary Ellen and John were one of the five families who founded the First Church of Christ in Peru, Indiana, which recently celebrated a 60 year anniversary. She played the piano for services and had taught Sunday school classes for over 45 years.
She was an EMT for the Bunker Hill Ambulance Group for 18 years along with her husband. Mary Ellen also kept books for Quality Construction and Max Pitts. She also worked the switchboard at Dukes Memorial. Her missionary trips took her to Jamaica, two times to Mexico, six times to Mountain Missions in Grundy, VA., and one time to Pine School in Montana.
Mary Ellen is survived by two sons – David Jon and Christopher; two sisters – Nancy (DeWayne) Baldwin of Sweetzer and Loretta Hyle of Titusville, FL., and one brother – Glen (DeeAnn) Colescott of Kokomo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sons – Paul Nathan and Mark Andrew, along with six sisters and one brother.
Visitation will be held from 10am to 12pm on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at the First Church of Christ, 2584 S. Business 31, Peru. The funeral service will follow at 12pm with Pastor Shane Capps officiating. Burial will take place at Springdale Cemetery in Bunker Hill, Indiana.
