Lou Ann Orman, 92, passed away Thursday, June 23rd at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru. Lou Ann was born Oct. 17, 1929 in Saguache, Colorado. After spending nearly 69 years together, her beloved Don passed away just 8 days before her, no doubt making sure her accommodations would be perfect first.
Destined to be an academic, Lou Ann’s mother was an elementary teacher while her father was the school principal. Lou Ann graduated El Indio High School in Saguache, Colorado in 1948 and was named Salutatorian. She graduated in 1952 from the University of Denver and later earned her Masters in Education from Indiana University in Kokomo.
Lou Ann taught elementary for 27 and a half years, teaching both overseas and for Randall School (Maconaquah School Corporation). Quick to remind you of the extra half year, anyone who’s taught children can relate. Forever an educator, she taught herself phonics and could be heard encouraging new readers to “sound it out” and instilling in them a love of books.
Don and Lou Ann met at a USO dance in 1953 and were smitten, they married a few short months later and were inseparable ever since. They shamelessly adored one another and all those around them marveled at how close they were. Don and Lou Ann traveled all over the world living in Scotland, Italy, Germany and even England. They roved all over Indiana, square dancing and camping with their closest friends. Their adventurous nature was passed on to their children and grandchildren and they lived each day to the fullest.
Lou Ann leaves behind her children Kevin (Barbara) Orman, Kathy Orman; her chosen children Cheryl & Glen, grandchildren Shae, Kasey, Rylee & Jessica, numerous great-grandchildren and hundreds of students she treated as if they were her own.
Visitation will begin on Monday, June 27th from 1-4 with funeral services to follow at Allen Funeral Home 136 S Elm St, Bunker Hill, IN 46914.
Donations in Lou Anns name may be made to the Indiana State Teachers Association or the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.
