John Henry Engel, 98 of Peru passed away Monday, September 4, 2017 in Community Howard Regional Hospital, Kokomo. He was born in Cass County on November 29, 1918 to Charles P. and Elsie M. (Garber) Engel. On July 7, 1939, he married Vera L. (Klise) Engel, they were happily married for 72 years. She passed away May 29, 2012.
John graduated from Bunker Hill High School in 1936. He was a Charter Member of the Pipe Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department in 1949. John was an agent for Standard Oil of Indiana Company and retired in 1975.
John and his wife Vera enjoyed many years of retirement where they traveled all over the United States and spent their winter in Spring Hill, Florida.
He is survived by his son John Howard Engel, Bunker Hill; son-in-law Dennis Ege, Walton; and daughter-in-law Debra Engel, Texas.
Seven grandchildren; Marilyn (Brian) Shively, Carolyn Kaufman, Jerry (Debi) Engel, Teresa (Scott) Beckley, Cheryl (Mike) Ross, Darren (Michelle) Ege, Debbie (David) Long. Two step-grandchildren Danielle Hinkle and Derrick Degraw.
Eighteen great-grandchildren; Kassi Kotkoski, Justin Engel, Nathan Shively, Sara Murphy, Janel Townsend, Cole Beckley, Ian Shively, Janae Waymouth, Kayde Sager, Emily Licklider, Emily Ross, Corey Long, Ellie Alspaugh, Alicia Ross, Brooke Long, Brady Ross, Landen Hinkle and Alyssa Degraw.
Ten great-great grandchildren; Weston Graves, Jaden Manriquez, Ava Shively, Braxton Manriquez, Natalie Sager, Trevor Shively, Porter Kotkoski, Harper Shively, Hadley Shively and Kenneth Licklider.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers; Galen Engel and Delbert Engel. Three sisters Nina Stout, Mary Lendman and Alice Sutton. Daughter; Mary Lou Ege, son; Michael Engel and grandson; Jeffrey Engel.
A service celebrating the life of John Henry Engel will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 8, 2017 at Allen Funeral Home, 136 S. Elm St., Bunker Hill with Pastor Tyler Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery, Bunker Hill. Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Friday prior to the service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pipe Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department.
