Jesse J. “Sonny” Ulmer went home to Glory on Thursday, July 1, 2021 to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is preceded in death by: parents-Jesse Theophillos Ulmer and Bessie Maye Newton; siblings- Earleene Speights, Earnesteen Hebert, Odeene Ulmer, and John C. Ulmer; and one great-grandchild-Dakota Raelyn Larson.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 69 years, Nethel Ulmer; children-Sharon (Robert) Hollifield, Jesse (Ingrid) Ulmer, Penny (John) Spradley; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be held at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana on Friday, July 9, 2021; Viewing-9:00am, Services-11:00am, and burial at Marion National Cemetery, Marion, IN on Monday, July 12, 2021 at 11:00am.
Jesse J. “Sonny” Ulmer was born June 9, 1932 in Muleshoe, Texas, graduated high school from Rougon High School in Rougon, LA. He was inducted into the famed 1st Armored Division in December 1952; fought in the Korean Conflict, was assigned as driver for General Douglas MacArthur and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. After military service Sonny pursued education at Bible Baptist Seminary becoming a preacher. He spent his retirement years as an avid cattle farmer and gardener.
