Harry Smith Obituary

Harry “David” Smith, age 95, of Peru, IN went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, April 6, 2023.

David was born July 28, 1927 to Harry and Lora Hartley Smith in Patoka, IN.   David retired from the C&O Railroad and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army Corp Engineers and served in the Korean War.

In 1945 David moved to Princeton, IN and on April 7, 1945 he married “his million dollar baby” Maudella Jones.  They were married for 75 years before she preceded him in death November 23, 2020.

David was a faithful man who loved the Lord and his family.  If you asked David how he was, he would always respond with “I’m Blessed”. He attended the Loree Brethren Church in Bunker Hill for many years.  He also enjoyed collecting and repairing clocks of all kinds and working puzzles. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved dog and best friend, Duke.

Although David and his wife never had any children of their own, they had many nieces and nephews whom they loved very much. Niece Patsy Ruark, Great Nieces Amy (Brad) Fenton and Jamilee (Phillip) Chapman. Great-Great Audrey (Cayne) Hults, Bryce (Danielle) Chapman, Grace Wagstaff, Alexis Chapman, Baila Chapman, Max Dawson, Wesley Chapman and Ava Fenton.  Great-Great-Great nieces and nephews Fynnleigh, Riley & Cayden Hults. Sawyer Chapman. Brynleigh Chapman, Brayleigh and CJ Barrett. As well as many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews in Southern Indiana.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his 3 brothers and 2 sisters, Robert Smith, Eldon Smith, Charles “CD” Smith, Genevieve Wright and Virginia Ireland.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Flowers Leedy Funeral Home, 105 W. 3rd St, in Peru from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with services immediately following.  David will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru.
