Obituary

Dorothy I. “Dottie” (Pope) Greer, 91, of Peru, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2021 at home with family by her side following an extended illness with dementia.

She was born on October 6, 1930 to Cecil and Mary (Spurgeon) Pope while visiting in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  She was a 1948 Peru High School graduate.  On July 24, 1948, she married the love of her life, Joe T. Greer from Mexico, Indiana.  He preceded her in death on September 11, 1998.

She is survived by her son, John Greer, and daughter Cassandra “Cassie” Smith, and one grandson, Zane Smith (Gracie Ressett), all of Peru.  Also, one sister, Alex (Dennis) Shigemura, Hawaii, and many loved nieces and nephews here and across the country.

Dottie was preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, and oldest son Thomas (Tom) Greer on April 9, 1998.  Also, 3 brothers Robert, George, and Cecil Jr.; and 5 sisters Patricia Sims, Marilyn Merrick, Janet Bailey, Norma Hiers, and Linda Garber.

Dottie was a business woman in Peru for 37 years.  She formerly owned and operated the Modern Dairy Bar, the Snack Shop, the Corner Cupboard, and Dottie’s Donuts, catering business, and beauty salon in the Mugavin Manor.  She also ran the Elk’s Dining Room for a few years.  She received her real estate license and sold homes for Candlish Realty before becoming a broker and having her own Town and Country Real Estate.  She retired from Peru’s BMV to care for her husband.

Dottie was involved in Peru politics.  She served as vice chairman to Bun Gallahan of the Democratic party.  She was elected to Peru’s City Council and served as Precinct Committeeman of Peru 4.  She loved to read books, cook, bake pies, take photos, research her family genealogy, host parties and visits with family that always entailed pinochle or euchre.  She could always be found on her hands and knees gardening on her corner lot.  She will be sadly missed by family and all who knew her.
