David Sonafrank Obituary

David Lee Sonafrank, 76, of Peru, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

David was born in Peru, Indiana on December 15, 1946 to Joseph Lowell and Della Mary (Hiebert) Sonafrank. In 1975, he married Emma Jean (Clemons) Sonafrank and she preceded him in death on April 5, 1998. David was also preceded in death by his companion, Delores Smyth, on February 24, 2012.

David was a proud Army veteran. He enlisted in the military on July 8, 1969 and served for 2 years. During his time in the Army, David received many commendations, such as, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and also a Purple Heart.  He was retired from Chrysler as an Inspector.

David is survived by a step-daughter, Debbie Hartleroad, of Peru. He is also survived by brothers, James (Connie) Sonafrank of Peru, Paul Dale (Lynann) Sonafrank of Columbia City, and sisters, Julia Beanblossom and Mary (Phillip) Fultz of Peru, and Katherine Moore of Lagrange. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

David was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma Jean; his companion, Delores Smyth; step-children, Irma Scarlett, Georgia Cook, Linda Chappa, Barbara Babcock, and Larry Barnes; a brother, Joseph Lowell Sonafrank; and sisters, Grace Bowman and Joan Wylam.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 from 11am-1pm at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana. The funeral service will follow at 1pm. Burial will take place at Gaerte Cemetery in northern Miami County. Miami County Military Rites Team will provide military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Miami County Military Rites Team.
