Dalhart Harold Metzger, 86, of Peru, Indiana peacefully passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022. Dal was born in Peru, Indiana on February 27, 1936. He was the second child and second son of Alvin Harold and Mary Margaret Fisher Metzger.
He grew up as a farmer’s son and always loved living in the country. He attended Nead grade school and graduated from Bunker Hill High School in the class of 1954. He was very active in his high school and was an excellent athlete. He played on the baseball, basketball, and volleyball teams, and ran track. He also served on the Student Council as secretary, and was a member of the 4-H Club.
He began his banking career as a teller shortly after graduating high school and retired in 1997 as Vice President of American Trust Federal Savings Bank after 35 years. He was an active and respected member of his community where he served as a Miami County Trustee. He was raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason on January 1, 1959, and was also a member of the Shriners since 1969.
His avid love of customized cars led him to start the Peru Kustom Kings Auto Club, where he served as President. His favorite customized car was his 1953 Mercury. He hosted numerous Club meetings at his home, and the Club continued to be active after his retirement. He owned and restored countless antique cars throughout his life and had a special love for Chevrolet Corvettes. He was actively involved in showing Corvettes and was a member of the National Corvette Restorers Society where he also judged Corvettes. He always said “if it’s not red, it’s not a Corvette”.
Dal lived life to the fullest. He valued God, hard work, honesty, and the value of a man’s word. He was a kind and generous person, and made friends with everyone he met. He always made time for anyone who needed him, and he was the first to reach out and help someone in need. He was known and loved by many and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Maxfield (Joann) Metzger, his sister, Inalee (Ralph) Brown, and parents, Alvin Harold and Mary Margaret Fisher Metzger.
