Brentis Berkshire Obituary

Brentis R. Berkshire, 93, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Waterford Place Health Campus Legacy Unit in Kokomo .

He was born in Young America, Indiana on November 5, 1925 to Charles Daniel and Gwendolyn Reed Berkshire.  He married the love of his life, Rosalie, on June 15, 1947.  He was a World War II veteran having served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy.  He attended Indiana University where he received both a bachelors and masters degree in education as well as a principal and superintendent license.

Brent spent his career in education first as a teacher and basketball/baseball coach in Grovertown , Indiana and then as a guidance counselor and health and safety teacher at Peru High School .  He then became the principal of Elmwood Elementary School where he served for 30 years.

During the summer, he and Rosalie moved to Koontz Lake in northern Indiana where he taught drivers education at Culver Military Academy .  He loved to fish and golf and was a fierce competitor playing ping pong with family and friends.

Brent was a member of the First Christian Church in Peru where he served as an elder.  He was also an active member of the Peru Lion’s Club and the Peru Masonic Temple .

He is survived by his son Michael (Laurie), and his two granddaughters Amy (Berkshire) Filstrup (Christopher), Duluth , Minnesota and Jill “Dani” Berkshire Coker (Chris), Muncie , Indiana .  He was preceded in death by his wife Rosalie, parents Charles Daniel and Gwendolyn Berkshire, brother Bert Berkshire and sister Mary Jo Berkshire.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Legacy Unit at Waterford Place Health Campus in Kokomo for their kind and loving care of Brentis during his final few years.

Viewing and a short service will take place at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana on Saturday, April 6 from 10am - 12 noon, with a graveside service with military honors immediately following at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora, Indiana.  The Reverend James Loft from First Christian Church will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to the Peru First Christian Church, 53 W Main St, Peru, Indiana 46970 or the Legacy Unit at the Waterford Health Campus, 800 St Joseph Dr, Kokomo , Indiana 46901.
