Phillip L. Townsend

Phillip L. Townsend, 78, of Peru passed away at 2pm on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at his home, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born in Peru on October 27, 1940 to Luther A. and Margaret N. (Bechdol) Townsend.  He married Ruth Darlene Denny on May 14, 1962 in El Paso, Texas, and she survives.  Phillip worked at Chrysler in the skilled trades, as an electronic gauge repairman.  He served in the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers, and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Peru.

He is survived by his wife and his children, John A. Townsend, Elizabeth (Darren) Parker of Peru, and Kathryn (David) Keith of Greenville, IN.  Also, grandchildren: Margaret Evans, Clinton Evans, Kyle Townsend , Jerrica Townsend, Meghan Hunter, Jonathon Leake,  Jacquelyn Hunter, Adam Miller,  David Keith, Jason Keith, Brandi Keith,  Micheal Shanabarger, Phillip Parker, Kathryn Parker; and great-grandchildren: Ryleigh Dillman, Xander Evans, Taydenn Townsend, Emery Townsend, Morgan Keith, Macie Keith, Sage Keith, Jalynn Keith, Kimiko Keith, and Kylie Keith.  Also surviving is a sister, Roberta Norket of South Carolina and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Kevin Wayne Townsend,  brother Fredrick Townsend, sister Ruth Eytcheson, nephew Brian Townsend, and great-niece Leighann Townsend.

Visitation was held from 10am – 11am on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 181 West Main Street, Peru, Indiana.  Funeral service followed at 11am, with Pastor Kenneth Greenwald officiating.  Burial took place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Roof Fund.
