Mrs. Jo Ann Elizabeth "Joie" (Brown) Woodburn died peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 7, 2019 in Peru, Indiana at the age of 73 years old.

Jo Ann is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Woodburn, Sr.; 3 children: Thomas L. Woodburn, Jr and wife Jill Woodburn, of Bicknell, IN; Dawn A. Sharkey, and husband Richard Sharkey of Colorado Springs, CO; TerriAnn L. Woodburn of Indianapolis, IN; 6 Grandchildren: Denzale Jennings, Raeanne Jennings,  Ian Sharkey, Tucker Woodburn, Jacob Sharkey, and Tyrese Woodburn. She is preceded in death by Alberta C. Newlin, William E. Newlin, and Grand Daughter Raeanne.

Jo Ann Brown was born in West Chester, PA on September 16, 1945 to Alberta C. Newlin. She graduated from Simon Gratz High School in 1964 and went on to attend Ball State University. She married Thomas L. Woodburn, her childhood sweetheart and a Marine Private First Class in 1964. After moving to California, Jo Ann began work as a Nursery School Teacher. Over the next year, the couple welcomed their first-born son Thomas Leroy into their home. Thirteen months later, they welcomed their second child, Dawn Arlene. Three years later, they welcomed another daughter, Terri Ann Louise. Jo Ann instilled in her children, the importance of family, education and a strong work ethic. Her children remember her as a woman who was passionate about her family, always putting their needs before her own. She full heartedly supported each of her children and grandchildren in whatever venture they chose to explore, always encouraging them to pursue their goals.

Jo Ann was accomplished at sewing and singing. She had of love of life, inspiring any child who she encountered, always encouraging them to further their education. She was passionate about making sure opportunities were available to those who wanted a college education, finding grants to help fulfill those dreams. She was an active member of St. Charles Catholic Church, as well as a Mentor and Tutor at the Wayman AME Church. She volunteered with the Democratic Party during elections and founded a social group called “Women of Retired Servicemen”, enjoying the challenge of organizing luncheons and events in the local area.

A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, March 16th at Flowers Leedy/Allen Funeral Home, 105 West Third St., Peru, IN 46970 from 2pm-4pm. The service begins at 4pm with a repass to follow at Wayman AME Church, located at 201 E. 3rd  Peru, IN 46970. Rev. Maurice Reed, Rev. Anneta Ranken, and a representative from St. Charles Catholic Church will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jo Ann's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Charles Catholic Church at 58 West 5th St., Peru, IN 46970. Condolences can be sent to info@flowersleedyallen.com. The family would like to thank Wayman AME Church for the food donations, blessings, and prayers. Additionally we would like to thank all our friends and family for the shower of love during our time of need.
