Lt . Col. Eugene A. Berger Jr. (Ret)., 81, took his angel flight home at 6:30pm on Thursday, February 21, 2019 with his loving wife of 26 years by his side.
Gene was born on August 12, 1937 in Mansfield, Ohio to Eugene Adolph Berger Sr. and Garnet Lucille (Shaum) Berger. He married the love of his life, Debbie, in Kokomo, Indiana on February 21, 1993. He returned to Indiana four years ago, after in living in Mansfield, Ohio.
Gene retired from Grissom AFB as a pilot after proudly serving his country for 27 years. Besides his military career, Gene attended several universities and was a Chinese linguist. He ended his work career retiring from Flair Design Limited in Kokomo, Indiana where he met his wife, Debbie. His greatest love besides his wife was family and friends. His hobbies included Bible studies, flying sports aircrafts, golfing, camping, antique shopping, driving through X Factor trophy white tails and eagle watching along the Wabash River. Gene had a great love for music and loved singing and playing his guitar with friends. Gene and his wife attended Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Peru Indiana, where Bud Sparks is pastor.
Gene is survived by his wife Debra S. Berger, a brother Larry J. Berger of Livermore, California. Also, eight biological children and one adopted son, many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and along with his other BFF Tom McFadden.
Calling hours will be from 3:00pm – 6:00pm on Monday, February 25, 2019 at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana. Funeral service will follow at 6:00pm, with Tom McFadden and Pastor Rick Tolley officiating, followed by Military honors. Gene’s desire was to be cremated.
