Tom Languell Obituary

Tom Keith Languell, 82, of Peru, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024 at his residence.

Tom was born on July 20, 1941 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Raymond and Helen (Chronister) Languell. He was the 11th of 15 children. On February 9, 1991, Tom married Janice (Hudson) Languell.  He was a proud member of the Peru Lions Club and was a founding member of the Denver Lions Club. Tom was also a member of the National Umpire Association (NUA). He took great pride in maintaining his yard and flower garden. In fact, he won the Peru Garden Club’s “Garden of the Month” once.

Tom was employed at several General Motors Auto Dealerships in his forty-five years of employment.  His number one hobby was as a baseball umpire for over forty years. He umpired games from Little League through high school baseball and softball. The highlight of his career was being chosen to umpire the consolation games of the Little League World Series in 1984.

Tom was a survivor – he had cancer in 1997 and was given 3-5 months to live, but his positive attitude helped him to live 27 more years. He served God with a joyful spirit – as he did most things.

He is survived by his wife Janice; son, Thomas Languell of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Step-daughter, Theresa Edwards of Greentown, Indiana; Step-sons  Victor (Patty) Short of Converse, Indiana; Tony (Michelle) Short of St. Pete Beach, Florida, Step grandchildren; Joshua (Jennifer) Edwards of Greentown, Indiana, Sandi (Heath) Pharris of Conway, Arkansas, Katrina (Chris) Robinson, Peru; Elizabeth Short, Converse, Liam Short, St. Pete Beach, Florida, great- grandchildren; Kaycee Tedder; Eli and Abe Edwards; Callan, Riley, and Hayes Pharris; Chris Robinson Jr.; Andrew Robinson, great- great- grandchildren; Gentry Robinson, Addyson Robinson, “God children;” Zachery and Megan Truex, special friend, Todd Eckert, who became like a son to Tom the past few years, and sisters, Janice Stanski and Linda Peters.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Roger, Fred, David, Ray, Norman, Kenny, Richard, Gerald, Shirley, Sue, Marilyn, and Rita.
